Kentucky Swim Coach Retires

LEXINGTON, Ky. — After 22 years at the helm of the Kentucky swimming and diving program, Gary Conelly announced his retirement to his athletes Wednesday morning, closing the book on one of the longest head-coaching tenures in UK athletics history and a long, impressive journey through the sport.

Conelly began his coaching career at Kentucky as the head women’s coach for the 1991-92 season after spending three seasons as a graduate assistant with the Wildcats. A year later, Conelly added the men’s team to his responsibilities and became Kentucky’s head swimming coach. During his 22 years, he’s guided the teams to more than 200 victories.

NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel recommends increase of meet officials

INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel, which met via conference call Monday, approved a recommendation that all dual, double-dual, triangular and quadrangular meets have a minimum of two, three or four officials to properly observe all competitors equally and enforce playing rules for the 2013-14 season. This is a recommendation and not a mandate.

Additionally, panel members approved that all non-NCAA championship and invitational meets have at least six officials.

Members of the Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Rules Committee said that some regular-season meets were being conducted with only one official. Committee members believe it is difficult for one official to accurately see everything he/she needs to observe during a meet.

Busch named head coach at Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage on Wednesday announced that Augie Busch has been named the head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. Busch was the head coach of Houston’s women’s squad for the past two seasons.

“After doing the research to find a great fit and the type of coach best positioned to take over the Virginia swimming and diving program, there is no question in my mind that Augie Busch is someone who is uniquely qualified,” Littlepage said. “His background with top-ranked college programs, conference and NCAA champions and Olympic-level swimmers have all prepared him to build on our programs’ success at Virginia.”

In his two seasons at Houston, Busch led the Cougars to a fourth-place finish in Conference USA in 2012 and to a program-best second-place league showing this past season.
